I strongly agree. Walmart is now blaming tariffs for an inevitable rise in prices of many household items including groceries, as their pre-tariff inventories are now gone. How much price inflation pain will voters in conservative states put up with? It would be nice if they had something compelling as a voting choice but Democrat defeatism isn't it. Have trump's tariffs made the midterms a pocketbook issue?

The tariffs are not yet an issue, but will be THE issue by the time we're looking at the midterms. I hope the idiots who voted for Trump the Felon eat their words when this hits them in the pocketbook.

Hope. It only tends to get you through the next cycle.

I’ve been voting since 1972 and watching results before that. What I’ve seen is a constant seesaw. Exult if we take back the House. But that’s not enough. Without significant issues being used to hammer them, the Republicans will come right back the next cycle (in whatever screwy form they take).

Democrats need to identify the issues, the ones that people will vote on, like they did in the 60’s.

Take a hard look at Alaska. Sullivan is not popular and with ranked choice voting and open primaries at least for a while yet, you have a chance.

Take a hard look at PA. Dave McCormick won by the slimmest of margins, after a runoff. I don't believe he has done anything to endear him to us, given how many Pennsylvanians are veterans, working class and or on Medicaid or Medicare. And then there's the fact that he offshored a lot of jobs here when he was a vulture capitalist. Plus, he's a dick.

https://www.pewresearch.org/politics/2025/04/23/economic-ratings-and-concerns-2025/

92% of respondents are very or somewhat concerned about the price of food and consumer goods

87% very or somewhat concerned about the price of housing

81% very or somewhat concerned about the price of gas/energy

74% very or somewhat concerned about employment rates

Can't we get any Democratic candidates to claim (or at least step into) this space?

Yes, we can get some Republicans if they are paying attention.

Yep, on all the levels. An economic progressive democrat with moderate social issue stances could win in Red states. It's absurd not to recognize this and try. Except that the underlying assumption is the party is run by voters. It is not.

Because the democratic party still relies on Big Money, economic progressives with moderate social positions "somehow" don't seem to exist. They are a winning ticket in Red states and even, now, in Blue states. Big money doesn't want the actual winning ticket to win. So they use conventional "don't bother" wisdom and/or promote so-called progressive social issue candidates that are unpopular with average Americans to prevent the economic progressive policy that 80% of voters actually want from being a possibility.

The impending calamity of Trump/Vought/Musk shaking things up presents a huge opportunity in 2026 For the Senate if Big Money can be convinced it's in their interest to put forth economic populists for the Senate. Enlightened self-interest should inform the financial elite that is in their interest.

Let’s take the Senate and the house and bury these motherfucker Republicans for the rest of United States life. They have done enough damage and if they continue to be in power, they will annihilate the entire world.

McConnell is another arch villain responsible for the destruction of our democracy

Expand full comment
Elaine's avatar

Indeed he is. He's the main villain because he rushed through the three SCOTUS justice who are now allowing Trump to destroy the nation.

I hope McConnell is having lots of nightmares these days.

Voters think Dems are weak BECAUSE OF NEVER ENDING PROPAGANDA and an absolutely subservient MEDIA, both liberal and conservative. The only way to silence and defeat a BULLY is to CHALLENGE THEM AT EVERY TURN. And that BULLY has been successful at bullying a huge part of this country, up to and including infiltrating every single INSTITUTION in our DEMOCRACY. UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL. That is the state of our UNION.

BIG, BEAUTIFUL RUMPT SPONSORED GENOCIDE

The NAZIGOP GENOCIDE HERE IN AMERICA IS THIS and MORE:

Forced bred women die without medical care or options.

POOR people die without healthcare.

HUNGRY children to attend failing underfunded public school as if hungry humans can learn. Meanwhile, NAZIGOP KKKULT SCHOOLS GET TAX PAYER MONEY for their EQUESTRIAN AND POLO PROGRAMS.

Elderly people are condemned to homelessness.

VETERANS, who’s bodies for-profit-wars BROKE, are tossed like garbage.

THIS IS THE WAY of the NAZIGOP cosplaying the 4th REICH NAZIs.
