I’m so grateful for your curiosity because I find myself in the same boat of not accepting that we are just divided and the other side is stupid. You are seeking out people like Mr. Nichols who has finely tuned talking points and anecdotes and practicing what it looks like to be curious with someone like that. What made this very important is that of course he’s right! AND we’re not going to fix the problem unless we figure out how to keep having conversations that change and challenge the false narratives spewing from fox and president trump. So thank you for continuing to try to work that out with people and modeling curiosity. I’m following you and bought the book so I can keep trying that too.

Empathy versus tough love. Empathy AND tough love? I’m a big Tom Nichols fan; he’s the reason I subscribe to The Atlantic. As often happens, Tom’s comments made me uncomfortable. I bend towards empathy. That sometimes leads me to the grandiose attitude Tom describes. I’m a researcher by temperament and training. That sometimes leads me to assuming an expertise I don’t have. Thank heavens for Tom Nichols - he keeps me honest and humble.
